What Is Assisted Living for Seniors?

Assisted living means your loved one gets to keep living their life instead of just managing it. They wake up in their own apartment, have breakfast made for them, and decide how they want to spend their day. If they need help getting dressed, someone's there. If they forget to take their medication, someone notices. If they're lonely at dinner, there are people around who care.

“Assisted living for seniors is about gaining the freedom to live without the exhaustion of handling everything alone.”

Assisted Living in Short Pump, Henrico, and Richmond

The Berkeley sits right here in Short Pump on Gaskins Road, which means you don't have to drive hours away to visit your parent.

We're intentionally small, about 70 residents, so staff know people's names and families feel like they belong here instead of like they're visiting an institution.

Whether you're searching for assisted living in Richmond or Henrico or specifically in Short Pump, you're choosing a place where your parent isn't a number.

Private Assisted Living Apartments

Your loved one doesn't live in a room down a hallway with strangers passing by. They have their own private assisted living apartment with a bathroom that's theirs, a space that feels like home. They wake up to the apartment they chose, see the view they come to love, and maintain the rhythms that make them feel like themselves.

When they need help; with a shower, with getting dressed, with making sure dinner happens, someone is always there to assist. But the apartment, the independence, the ability to make choices about their day: that's theirs to keep.

How Much Does Assisted Living Cost?

People hesitate about the cost of assisted living, but the real question is what it's worth to know your parent is eating well, taking medications on time, and not struggling alone with the things that got too hard.

The average cost of assisted living varies by location and level of care, but at The Berkeley, your monthly investment covers everything: the apartment, three meals a day, utilities, activities that keep your parent engaged, housekeeping so they're not exhausted by chores, help with personal care, and staff who are there 24 hours a day. Below you'll see exactly what that costs.

Assisted Living FAQs

What is assisted living?

Assisted living is exactly what it sounds like: someone living in their own home with help when they need it. Your loved one has their own private apartment, their own schedule, their own choices about how they spend their day. If they need assistance with bathing or getting dressed, staff are trained to help. If they need reminders about medication or help with meals, that's there too. It's not a hospital. It's not a nursing home. It's someone continuing to live their life, just with support woven in so they're never struggling alone.

What is the difference between assisted living and a nursing home?

A nursing home is for people with serious medical conditions who need skilled nursing care and constant medical supervision. Assisted living is for people whose health is stable but who are tired of managing everything by themselves. If your parent is medically fine but struggling with cooking, cleaning, remembering medications, or just feeling isolated, assisted living is the answer. If they need actual medical care and monitoring, a nursing home is what they need. It's that simple.

How much does assisted living cost?

The average cost of assisted living depends on where you live and how much support someone needs. At The Berkeley, your monthly fee includes your private apartment, three home-cooked meals a day, all your utilities, access to activities and social programs, housekeeping and laundry, personal care assistance, medication management, and staff available around the clock. View our full pricing. It's an investment in your parent's quality of life and your own peace of mind.
